Lifeguard
SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Aquatics Supervisor and Head Lifeguard, the Lifeguard is expected to follow the daily lifeguard rotations and opening/closing duties, provide daily Swimming Proficiency Tests as scheduled by the Head Lifeguard, perform the required Lifeguard Swimming/Fitness Bi-Weekly In-Service Assessment, and maintain a safe space for patrons to swim/recreate. Sapulpa Aquatic Center Lifeguards supervise the safety of patrons who visit the Sapulpa Aquatic Center. The Lifeguard must demonstrate strong customer service skills with a positive and energetic personality. The Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the health and safety of patrons by guarding their area of responsibility. The Lifeguard is responsible for responding to any level of incident or emergency around the pool area/facility. The Lifeguard is responsible for maintaining communication and relationships with other staff/patrons while enforcing established rules in a fair and polite manner and completing any other tasks as assigned by the Aquatics Supervisor or Head Lifeguard. Above all, safety of our staff and guests is of the highest importance.
MAJOR DUTIES:
Other Aquatics Responsibilities
- Provide a high level of safety by preventing accidents and saving lives.
- Prevent accidents and save lives by enforcing and following pool rules and using proper lifeguarding procedures when needed.
- Educate the public in pool/aquatic center safety.
- Monitor pool areas as assigned.
- Maintain constant surveillance of patrons in the facility.
- Act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of an emergency.
- Provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical personnel.
- Perform appropriate water rescues when necessary.
- Assist with various events/programs as assigned.
- Participate in special events as directed by the Aquatic Supervisor or Head Lifeguard.
- Perform various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility.
- Brush side walls; skim surface of the pool; prepare pool surroundings for daily use by (including but not limited to) straightening tables, chairs, pool equipment and guard room; and dispose of trash and debris.
- Maintain amenities and cleanliness of changing rooms, bathrooms and showers.
- Maintain guard room and storage areas as needed.
- Keep Aquatics Supervisor/Head Lifeguard informed of any problems arising with patrons, other staff members, or the facility.
- Arrive to the Sapulpa Aquatics Center 30 minutes before opening of the facility (Noted on your schedule).
- Wear proper Lifeguard uniform upon arrival.
- Enforce pool rules in a prompt and courteous manner.
- Provide constant undistracted attention to the pool area.
- Report all accidents, administered first aid, and incidents with an Incident Report.
- Check all safety equipment when coming on duty and remedy any unsafe conditions.
- Attend daily check-in meetings with Head Lifeguard to address any questions, daily large groups, changes in schedules, or issues relating to the facility.
- Attend staff meetings when requested to do so.
- Attend all scheduled lifeguard training sessions.
- Attend to specific setup, breakdown, and/or cleaning duties adherent to your shift.
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
- Ability to follow direction from Aquatic Supervisor and Head Lifeguard.
Specific Lifeguard Responsibility
- Fully understand planned emergency procedures, rules, and maintenance schedules.
- Ability to enforce posted rules.
- Focus attention on swimmers at all times.
- Be alert and attentive.
- Never leave the pool unattended.
- Keep the slide open at all times.
- Insist patrons comply with all pool regulations. When rules are broken, explain why the regulation is necessary. Safety is key.
- Take necessary steps to prevent accident to injury.
- No reading or use of cellular phone or smart device while on duty.
- Provide Swimming Proficiency Tests for all children that meet required criteria.
- Keep a record of all the children with a successfully passed Swimming Proficiency Test.
- Report to the Aquatics Supervisor/Head Lifeguard any pool maintenance problems, discipline problems, and any safety concerns.
- Maintain current required certifications.
- Check for glass around the pool deck and with patrons. If a patron has glass, it is the responsibility of all Sapulpa Aquatic Center staff to SAY SOMETHING to the patron about pool safety, no glass allowed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- A current YMCA, Red Cross Lifeguarding, or Red Cross Shallow Water Lifeguarding Certification.
- A current CPR/First Aid/Oxygen/AED for Adult, Child, Infant Certification for the Professional Rescuer.
- Flexible schedule with required minimum to work 30 hours per week.
PROFICIENCY OF EQUIPMENT:
- The Lifeguard must show a proficiency in the use and operation of the following equipment; and any other equipment deemed necessary to complete job duties.
- Lifesaving equipment such as rescue tubes, rescue hooks, ring buoys, spine boards, and c-collars, etc.
REQUIRED UNIFORM:
- Female Lifeguards: Red, navy, or black one-piece swimming suit with navy or black shorts, lifeguard shirt or tank top, whistle on breakaway lanyard at neck, hat with front brim, and sunglasses.
- All female lifeguards must wear shorts.
- Male Lifeguards: Red, navy, or black board shorts, Lifeguard shirt or tank top, whistle on breakaway lanyard at neck, hat with front brim and sunglasses.
- Whistle, hat and sunglasses are REQUIRED!
